5 Unique Ways To Reduce Unnecessary Waste

Protecting the environment should be an important part of your daily life, but it can be difficult to focus on that practice when products come in wasteful packaging. Although you can’t control everything that happens to the earth, you can do your part by reducing your carbon footprint and learn how to reduce waste. Most waste goes into landfills, which can have a negative impact; follow along to learn a few simple and unique ways to reduce unnecessary waste in your household.

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Plastic water bottles are one of the top items taking up space in landfills, as many people use multiple bottles every day. You can reduce the amount of plastic your family uses by ensuring each person has their own reusable water bottle to drink from and refill throughout the day. This way, you can maintain a healthy water intake while removing a big portion of unnecessary waste.

My everyday reusable water bottle is this one! I have been using it for 2+ years and love the amount of water it holds AND it is dishwasher safe. All the reusable water bottles below are my family’s favorites and they are all also dishwasher safe!

Shop With Reusable Bags

Most stores provide paper or plastic grocery bags, but you should avoid using them as much as possible. Consider using your own cloth or insulated bags, which are more durable and can be reused for years to come. Even if you keep plastic bags to use for another purpose, you can avoid taking any by keeping a small collection of reusable bags in the trunk of your car.

Grow Your Own Food

Because most food comes in some form of packaging, you may find yourself throwing away various pieces of cardboard, paper, and plastic. Although some waste is nearly impossible to avoid, you can prevent unnecessary food wrappers and packaging by growing your own fruits and vegetables. If you have an apple tree or blueberry bush in your yard, you can cross those items off your grocery list.

With a few tips for blueberry bush care, you can get the healthiest and most delicious berries possible. There’s nothing better than homegrown fruits and vegetables when it comes to tasty homemade dishes and desserts.

Donate or Sell to Secondhand Shops

Sometimes, it can be difficult to get rid of unwanted clothing, but you should avoid throwing these items in with your normal waste. If you’re unable to pass your old clothes down to a friend or family member, consider donating or selling your items to a secondhand shop. You may earn some returns on your items, but, more importantly, you’ll extend the life of your clothes by giving them the potential for a new owner.

Invest in Food Storage Containers

Many people waste a lot of plastic bags and other disposable food containers because they don’t like washing dishes. Unfortunately, this practice produces an excessive amount of unnecessary waste. If you tend to have leftover food after dinner or make your own lunches, consider investing in glass food storage containers to hold your food until you’re ready to eat it. This way, you’ll have containers you can use for years without adding anything to your waste generation.

Below are the best food storage containers, because they are uniquely made to make your fruits and vegetables last longer! This is a must! To learn more about how we use them, check out my post here.

Hopefully, these unique ways to reduce unnecessary waste will help you remain conscious of what you put in your garbage can. While it’s nearly impossible to reduce waste entirely, you can dramatically decrease your negative environmental impact by making a few sustainable changes to your lifestyle.
