Our daughter, Tenley is 3.5 years old and is been obsessed with mermaids!
Anyone else’s kids share the same love for mermaids?
We are about 3 months into quarantine with a toddler, infant, and my husband working from home. During this whole shelter in place, our days have been very long… sometimes frustrating, and sometimes just downright exhausting. It really does get to you!
So I wanted to surprise my toddler daughter with something that she would appreciate…
↠ DIY Seashell Mermaid Hair Clips ↞
I created a DIY station for her to make mermaid hair clips made out of seashells that she painted, and then I helped her hot glue gun the seashells to hair clips.
Instantly, she said,
“Mama, I am a mermaid now!”
That made me so happy to see her so excited and surprised! For more details on all the materials used, feel free to look below!
How to Make the Wooden Stand.
It is likely that you may have these laying around your house…
These crates are great for storage solutions! I used 4 wooden crates and just made it look like a stand by stacking them together!
You honestly can rearrange it anyway you like! I just stacked them together. No glue or anything.
You can get these wooden crates at craft stores and even, Home Depot!
After we finished this mermaid party, these wooden crates are used to store and organize toys around the house. I love making things, like these wooden crates, into more multi-functional items!
Then on the side of the stand are just 2 long wooden sticks that I purchased from Home Depot for another project. I always have these sticks laying around the house due to previous and future DIYs.
They usually only cost less than $4 for a whole wooden stick!
I just used clear packing tape to tape the two wooden sticks on the side.
DIY Mermaid Hair Clips!
How does it work?
STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR SHELLS
Have your child pick out their favorite seashells!
I purchased these seashells from Amazon and am so surprised by the quality and variety of seashells!!
I literally spent about 45 minutes reading reviews and such on Amazon to find good seashells.
STEP 2: TIME TO PAINT THEM AND ADD SHIMMER!
It is time to paint!
I highly recommend getting glitter paint or adding glitter for that added mermaid sparkle!
Here are some of the paints we used:
STEP 3: LET’S HOT GLUE THESE SHELLS!
Wait for the paint to dry.
This was the hardest part for my toddler…typical, right?! LOL.
Once it is dry, grab the glue gun and hair clips. This is when adults should always help the kids glue their beautiful seashells on their hair clips!

for another great option for this activity! These are blank headbands that you can have your kids add shells on!

BE A MERMAID.
How beautiful are these hair clips?! I absolutely love how happy and surprised this Mermaid Party made her feel!
I absolutely love these printables from Olive & Eve Co. It was exactly what we needed for this Mermaid Party surprise for my daughter!

I highly recommend looking at all of her printables, because they are SO DARN CUTE!
